“THE Y TRANSFORMED ME INTO A CONNECTOR OF PEOPLE AND A COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER”
When I retired from teaching, I had the desire to participate in something athletic but low impact since I’m in my sixties. My daughter told me about senior volleyball at the Y. I hadn’t played a sport in some time, but when I went to the Y, everybody was so nice and friendly that I felt at home right away. Five years later, they call me the “Volleyball Coordinator” and I play twice a week with a wonderful group of people who range from 52 to 89 years old… and we are always welcoming new players. It’s not just about playing the game though, we have a meaningful social connection. Over the years, we have come to rely on one another for friendship and support – and we all look forward to our time together. I have come to see that that the Y is much more than a place to exercise; it’s a place where people can come together to feel good about themselves, each other, and the community.
