POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Director, under the direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for organizing and implementing a diverse and safe Day Camp program. The Director will be directly responsible for program implementation and quality, and will represent the YMCA of Long Island in a positive, professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient and courteous service. Responsibilities also include hiring, staff supervision, budget control, planning and confirmation of staff assignments and schedules and staff training.

This leader will provide vision, energy, and spirit to make every summer a unique, exciting, and memorable experience, while creating a positive and safe environment for our participants. In addition, will assist in the oversight of all aspects of camp management, such as promoting enrollment through camp marketing events, interviewing and hiring qualified staff, as well as building the daily camp schedule and calendar of camp events. Must serve as a role model for camp staff, training them in the skills they need to be successful in their camp roles.

The Camp Director role will require excellent customer service skills, the ability to multi-task, thorough knowledge of programs and services provided at both locations, and detailed knowledge of the computer operating systems including Campsite.

Advances the YMCA’s mission through executing our strategic initiatives, providing exceptional customer support and driving functional excellence. Flexibility is essential and position may require nights and weekends as needed to ensure adequate staffing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee all operations of Y Summer Day Camp programs at branch and off-site. Include pre-planning, program development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive summer camp operations.  Identify and solves problems, implement appropriate discipline techniques, and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Direct and supervise program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establish new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Assist in the recruiting, hiring, training, developing, scheduling and directing personnel and volunteers as needed. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with state and local camp licensing agencies (DOH, ACA, etc.) related to assigned programs. Assure all programs are following mandated policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed. Manage the staff schedule to ensure that staff-to-child ratios are met.
  • Implement the local marketing and distribution of program information. 
  • Maintain constant communication with parents and other staff members regarding program updates and activities. This will include camp related phone calls, emails, and texts. 
  • Set-up and organize equipment and the supplies for camp activities.
  • Ensure the successful growth and retention of program participants and summer campers.
  • Monitor program budget to meet fiscal objectives. Compile program statistics. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Attend and represent the branch at Association Office Camp Cabinet meetings.
  • Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Maintain a consistent professional image through dress, actions and relationships with others. Speak enthusiastically on behalf of the YMCA at given opportunities.
  • Follow and enforce YMCA procedures and policies including; personnel guidelines, safety guidelines, facility access procedures and membership policies. Carry out emergency plans as necessary.
  • Manage and ensure camp payments are received. This includes families are paid in full prior to camp unless an exception is approved by the Business Manager or Executive Director. Collect overdue payments if needed. Award camp scholarships. Manage 3rd party billing.
  • Manage Campsite for the East Hampton location. This includes reviewing and approving enrollment requests daily, confirming campers' membership status, checking previous balances, processing cancellations & changes, reporting, and handling communications.  
  • Perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience in camping, group work, recreation, and related fields.
  • Current Certifications in CPR, First Aid required, and RTE preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel between multiple offsite locations.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic
    segments of the community.
  • Customer service and sales experience.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, highly flexible and rapidly changing work environment.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mission driven programming and customer service.
  • Ability to articulate the YMCA mission and programs to staff, volunteers, and community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Strong administrative skills and attention to detail; demonstrated ability to follow standard practices and procedures, receive general instruction and supervision on work progress, and make significant contribution to end results.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, highly flexible and rapidly changing work environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities. May be required to drive between YMCA facilities and to training or meetings in various locations. May require the ability to swim. May require lifting up to 50 lbs.
